......standing on the threshold.....

Hello! Welcome to “the threshold”.....

it has been almost one year to the day that my husband Rodney and I signed a fairly steep lease for Cynde Roof Fine Art gallery. Was it the right decision to sign a long-ish lease when Covid numbers were spiking and Santa Fe was shutting down? We thought so and so we embarked on a new chapter. We thought the unprecedented shuttering of retail businesses was a short-lived anomaly but as things have evolved in the last year we learned to be so very wrong. Our retail family of shops in La Fonda have told us that having been in their locations some for almost 40 years that it will all be worth it once the “season” arrives.

I believe that we share the same thoughts and feelings as everyone else that has been turned loose from mask prison......and from disinfecting coupled with social distancing....we’re FREE,...we’re FREE!!! But this sneaky thought keeps surfacing in the back reaches of my mind. I was brave as our doors remained closed by government mandate....trying not to think of the rent accruing every 24 hours. But what will happen when we have a “season”?

And indeed the beings on the sidewalk have changed from “drifting in the wind lost dog posters” and occasional tumbleweeds rolling down Old Santa Fe trail, to a few folks strolling to look in our display window. Underneath all this sauntering and strolling is a bubbling excitement about Memorial Day Weekend.

This is the beginning of the SEASON.  Seems like mom and pop businesses that carry all that Santa Fe charm are prepping for that customer flood that will carry us all through the summer as it has in the past.

Leave it to me to ponder the “threshold”. We are standing on a spot between where looking back, history has told us how to meet the public, how to sell our wares, how to have expectations. But looking forward is an unknown destiny with no rules in place for how “business as usual” will look post pandemic.

Holding the world high over our heads like Atlas and wondering what is going to shake out is now the limbo experience we face...never quite knowing where the bar is....not sure if we should pitch the decorative mask and emerge from our battle ready postures as our new selves...we’re timid...one year is a long time to be placed in solitary confinement.

But as we relearn how to put on lipstick, how to engage with strangers as we stand ready to cross the threshold, we have the opportunity to see the remains of the old world slide away and a bigger better chance for a brave new world to reveal itself. Can we be kinder and more genteel? Can we finally allow ourselves to purchase beautiful things like artwork that we truly want to acquire. Can we craft a spiritual sacred space that we hold for a new world and new routines that will fall into place? I say not to stick in a toe and move it arround but gallop over that threshold and make up for what you lost last year.....much has been said about the old saw of having 2020 eyesight.....well that view was dismal in small and big ways but 2021 can be as you like it. Basking in your own “SEASON” you can emerge as that beautiful butterfly.

So we step out over the threshold ready and excited for the flood of art lovers that will come streaming into Cynde Roof Fine Art and start our SEASON...we invite you to put YOUR best foot forward and conquer new worlds as you too take that step and crossover the threshold, everything lovely awaits!
