There is Magic In the Air

I think November is my favorite month. When dark cloudy scud across an ocean of endless skies I am prone to a flood of melancholy as I think back on the last few months. I know it is the season of slowing, of looking to nature, of wet dark branches. I love this change of seasons more than all the others.

Late fall effects me to the bone on an emotional level. I feel more animated and have a sense of invigorated reflection. I feel strangely energized and insightful.  It is as if I have chosen to remain pent up and dorment for the rest of the year but now my spirit bubbles, awakens, and turns over ever billowing and rising as I awake and exit my lair, far too big to be put back in my box. I feel that way as I smell wet leaves and pinon smoke……..As I know dinner will be hearty stews, roasted roots, and apple crisp…I am grateful for my one true love that I spend time with each day and is my favorite person above all others.

In November we have the chance to more meaningfully fill the hours. To mellow our hearts. The year is older as am I. The unexpected beckon s me outside for adventure signaling that danger could be involved…I enjoy the colors I see. Shredded bits of gold and topaz are leftovers from the green youth of early springtime. The dusty amethyst and white bark on our aspens is stunning…..skies are yellow and streaked with charcoal clouds in the morning. Pink sunsets are quiet as a tomb.

The Wild Wild West where I live now has sturdy trees that try to hang on to ghosty leaves that fringe naked branches. Tenacity rings through Nature as every bush and tree stretches out their boney limbs. And I feel especially strong in an inside way. I want to surround myself with good coffee, powerful books, beautiful artwork, a good quilt and my old cat on my lap.

My husband and I replace going to restaurants where we dine outside under warm twinkling lights with evenings at home that begin in earlier darkness. We still have those patio times but it is usually around a roaring fire that crackles lively and bright. We take pride in adding to our feathered nest with beautiful music and new artwork. We rehang pieces, move around furniture, add a drink to the list of favorites we seem to gyrate toward when the seasons change.

What gratitude we have knowing that Thanksgiving is right close and that we will be fortunate enough to feast….also that Christmas shopping will be fun this year.  And the gallery. A source of playful activity, meeting new friends, and making our way. When you’re in town come join us at CRFA. So many people have asked that we have decided to open on Thanksgiving afternoon from around noon until 4 pm.

Thank you for reading friends, you know what to do on turkey day afternoon in Santa Fe…we will welcome you with biscochitos and apple cider…
